Why a mountain pass in Yen Bai sits alongside the best-known flying sites in the world — and what makes this slope work almost year-round.
There are hundreds of paragliding sites in the world that let you look at mountains. Very few let you fly over a national heritage landscape that is still being farmed — where every terrace beneath your wing is the work of generations of Hmong families cutting into the mountainside.
Khau Pha Pass lies between Van Chan and Mu Cang Chai, running about 30km along Highway 32. The name means "Sky Horn" in the Thai language — the part of the mountain that rises above the sea of cloud. It is one of the four great mountain passes of northern Vietnam, alongside O Quy Ho, Ma Pi Leng and Pha Din.

1. Khau Pha paragliding site: the technical numbers

2. Terrain and wind — why only the Khau Pha slope works
Khau Pha is the only flying site in the entire Mu Cang Chai – Tu Le area. That is not an administrative fact but a technical one: a paragliding site needs three things at once, and only this slope has all of them.
Enough vertical. Launch at 1,268m, with a working band up to 2,000m. That margin gives the pilot time and space to handle any situation, and gives you a complete flight rather than a quick hop down.
Clean, steady wind orientation. The slope faces straight out over the Tu Le valley, producing consistent lift. No other slope in the region faces the wind this way — which is the technical reason no second site exists, however beautiful the scenery elsewhere.
A wide, flat landing field. The Lim Mong field is large enough for a safe landing even when the wind shifts, and has been used thousands of times.
Flying windows — two different slots for two different goals
This is commonly misunderstood, so to be precise:
— 11:00–14:00 is the best wind. Lift is strongest, and flights can run considerably longer. If you want airtime, this is your window.
— 8:00–10:00 and 15:30–17:00 give the best light. Low sun, richer colour in the terraces, noticeably better photos and video. The trade-off is shorter flights.
Neither window is more "correct" — it depends on whether you want duration or images. If you want both, powered paragliding solves it, because it does not depend on lift.

3. Flying over a Special National Monument
This is what separates Khau Pha from every other flying site, and it cannot be reproduced anywhere else.
The Mu Cang Chai rice terraces were designated a Special National Monument in 2019 — the highest tier in Vietnam's heritage system. The district holds roughly 2,200 hectares of terraces, of which 500 hectares across the communes of La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh have been farmed by Hmong families for centuries.
These terraces are not natural landscape. They are hand-built irrigation engineering: each step was designed to hold and channel water down from the ridge. Every curve you see is a contour line, calculated so the water runs slowly enough not to break the banks.
Flying a few hundred metres up, you see the entire system at once — thousands of steps linked into a network wrapping whole mountains. You never see this from the ground; a photograph from Mam Xoi hill shows you only one corner of it.

4. Over a decade of continuous flying at Khau Pha
Paragliding at Khau Pha is not a newly invented tourist product. A paragliding festival has run here annually since 2013, in late August and early September, timed to the start of the harvest. The most recent edition — the 2026 Flying Amid the Golden Season Festival — opened on 30 August 2026 at the Khau Pha landing field, organised by Mebayluon Paragliding together with the Tu Le commune authorities.
More than ten years of continuous flying over the same terrain produces something money cannot buy:
— Accumulated knowledge of the wind by season and by hour
— A working map of the air traps around the slope, and how to avoid them
— A landing field proven across thousands of landings
— A team of 15 pilots who know this terrain, rather than pilots brought in for the season
The site is managed and operated by Vien Nam Tourism and Sports JSC (Mebayluon Paragliding), holding a flight permit from the Ministry of National Defence and the paragliding operation licence from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism — covering site conditions, rescue procedures, medical provision and instructor standards. 5. Khau Pha on the world paragliding map
Khau Pha is listed by a number of international travel publications among the world's most beautiful paragliding sites. The region itself is regularly cited too:
— In 2020, Big 7 Travel placed Mu Cang Chai on its list of the 50 most beautiful places in the world
— In 2024, Wanderlust Storytellers ranked Mu Cang Chai first among 25 surreally beautiful places on earth
What matters is that these lists rank landscape, not flight operations. Khau Pha's standing comes from the ground beneath it — and that is something no competitor can copy, however good their equipment.

6. The site serves three different groups
Khau Pha is the only site in Vietnam running all three disciplines at once. At other sites you get one of the three.

Powered paragliding passengers. Independent of thermal lift, so the pilot controls both altitude and timing — this is the wing used for cloud chasing and sunset flights, two experiences an unpowered wing struggles to deliver. 2,690,000 VND per flight, 10–25 minutes depending on the package, currently promoted at 2,390,000 VND. Trainee pilots. Mebayluon runs pilot training at this site — a basic course of about 7 days, one-to-one instruction, running continuously.
