There are hundreds of paragliding sites in the world where you can look at mountains. Very few let you fly over a living national heritage site — where every terrace beneath your wing was cut into the mountainside by generations of Hmong families. That is what sets Khau Pha apart.
Khau Pha Pass lies between Van Chan and Mu Cang Chai, running some 30 km along National Highway 32. Its Thai-language name means "Horn of the Sky" — the peak that rises above the sea of cloud. It is one of the "four great passes" of Northwest Vietnam, alongside O Quy Ho, Ma Pi Leng and Pha Din.

Overview of Flying Activities at Khau Pha Pass (Mu Cang Chai)

The launch sits at the top of the pass, 1,268 m above sea level. The landing zone is the terraced field of Lim Mong – Lim Thai village in the valley below, about 2.7 km north of launch as the crow flies.
A tandem flight normally lasts 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the day's wind. If you want longer airtime there are two options: fly in the middle of the day, between 11:00 and 14:00, when conditions are usually best and flights can run considerably longer; or take a powered flight, where the duration is your choice rather than the air's.
The area has steady, reliable wind, which is the technical reason Khau Pha was chosen to host Vietnam's annual paragliding festival for more than a decade.
Khau Pha is one of the few sites in Vietnam running both disciplines side by side, and they offer completely different experiences.
Free-flight paragliding (classic tandem). Launching from the pass and using terrain and air currents to stay up. This is the classic form — total silence apart from the wind, the closest thing to flying like a bird. Airtime depends on the day's conditions.
Powered paragliding (paramotor). With engine thrust, the flight no longer depends on rising air. This opens up what free flight cannot do:
• Cloud hunting up to 2,000 m — flying above the sea of cloud instead of looking down at it from the pass
• Sunrise and sunset flights, hours when free flight often lacks the conditions to launch
• Extending the flight at will — where a free-flight tandem typically runs 10–15 minutes, a powered flight can stay up far longer regardless of lift
• Reaching places free flight cannot — away from the pass ridge and deep into the inner valleys
In short: free flight gives you the purest sensation of flying; powered flight gives you control over when and where.
Flying over a Special National Monument
This is the biggest difference, and the hardest thing to find at any other site.
The Mu Cang Chai rice terraces were designated a Special National Monument by the Prime Minister in 2019 — the highest tier in Vietnam's heritage system. The district holds around 2,200 hectares of terraces, of which 500 hectares across La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh have been farmed by Hmong families for centuries.
Those terraces are not natural scenery. They are hand-built irrigation engineering: each step was designed to hold and channel water flowing down from the summit. Flying a few hundred metres above, you see the entire system at once — something you can never see from the ground.
Two seasons, two entirely different landscapes
Most flying sites in the world have one good season. Khau Pha has two, and they differ so much that many pilots return a second time just to fly the other one.
Golden season (September–October). The rice ripens and the whole valley turns gold. This is peak season and coincides with the annual paragliding festival.
Water season (May–June). Farmers flood the terraces before transplanting. From the air, thousands of paddies become thousands of mirrors reflecting the sky. Fewer people know this season, but visually it is the most striking.
June and August bring the green season. And year-round, early mornings often fill the valley with a sea of cloud — with a paramotor you can climb above it.
More than a decade of flying history
Paragliding at Khau Pha is not a newly invented tourist product. The "Flying Over the Golden Season" festival was first run by the Vietwings Hanoi Paragliding Club in 2013, and has been an annual fixture in late September ever since.
More than ten years of continuous flying over the same terrain builds something money cannot buy: accumulated knowledge of the wind, of the good hours in a day, of the air traps around the ridges, and a landing field used thousands of times.
According to Ms Luong Thi Xuyen, Vice Chairwoman of the Mu Cang Chai People's Committee, 40–50% of visitors to the district each year come specifically to paraglide.

How a flight at Khau Pha works
On a tandem flight you need no experience at all. The sequence: meet your pilot and take the briefing at launch, get fitted with the harness and practise the run-up, launch on command, then relax and take in the view before landing in the Lim Mong fields.
On timing: 11:00–14:00 usually brings the best wind and the longest flights. Early morning and late afternoon give better light for photographs but shorter airtime — unless you choose a powered flight.
Requirements: under 120 kg (tell us in advance above 90 kg so we can assign the right pilot and equipment), enough basic fitness to run a few steps, minimum age 2. Not suitable during pregnancy or with heart or blood-pressure conditions.
What to bring: comfortable long-sleeved clothing, trainers or hiking shoes (we lend shoes free of charge), sunglasses against wind and UV. No skirts, no high heels.
Getting there
Khau Pha is 250–300 km northwest of Hanoi. The usual route follows National Highway 32 through Nghia Lo town and the Tu Le valley before climbing the pass. Tu Le sits only about 4 km from launch — the most practical base if you want an early-morning flight or a sunrise paramotor flight.
