1. Where does paragliding in Mu Cang Chai actually take place?
Many travellers search for paragliding in Mu Cang Chai, drive straight to Mu Cang Chai town, and find nobody flying there. It is the most common misunderstanding.
The flying site is not in Mu Cang Chai town. The launch sits on the summit of Khau Pha Pass, in Tu Le commune, about 40km from Mu Cang Chai town on the Hanoi side. Coming up from Hanoi, you reach the flying site before you reach the town.
Locating it by landmarks you already know
— The launch is about 23km from Garrya Mu Cang Chai
— The launch is about 20km from Mam Xoi hill
— The landing field is at Lim Mong hamlet, Tu Le commune, about 5km from Tu Le centre
In other words, both sites sit inside the Tu Le – Khau Pha – Mu Cang Chai triangle. You never leave the normal tourist route to reach them.
And it is the only site in the region. There is no second launch anywhere in Mu Cang Chai and no alternative. The reason is technical rather than administrative: only the Khau Pha slope brings together the three things a paragliding site needs.
A wide flying band. Launch from 1,268m on the summit, with a working range that runs from 1,268m up to 2,000m. That gives the pilot time and margin, and gives you a complete flight rather than a quick hop down.
Clean, well-oriented airflow. The slope facing the Tu Le valley produces steady lift through the morning and early afternoon, which is why the best slots are always 8:00–11:00 and 14:00–17:00. No other slope in the area faces the wind this way, which is why no other site exists.
Scenery with no rival. Below you lies the whole Lim Mong valley, terraces running unbroken from the foot of the pass out to the landing field itself. In harvest season the valley turns solid gold, broken only by stilt houses and kitchen smoke. Khau Pha ranks among the finest flying sites in Vietnam and in the world's top ten — not as marketing, but because very few places on earth put rice terraces of this scale directly beneath a proper flying site.
Can you launch from La Pan Tan or Mam Xoi hill?
No. La Pan Tan has no flying site, and from the Khau Pha flight path you cannot even see that area — a mountain range sits between them. Some online articles get this wrong. La Pan Tan and Mam Xoi hill are places you drive to for photographs; what you see in the air is the Lim Mong and Tu Le valley.
Is there anything besides tandem flights?
Yes — powered paragliding (paramotor, PPG) for cloud chasing and sunset flights, and an intensive pilot training course we run here ourselves. Khau Pha is the only place in Vietnam with all three. Powered paragliding is covered in detail in section 14 below.

3. When is the best time to paraglide in Mu Cang Chai? A month-by-month calendar
The short answer: late August to mid-October. But Khau Pha flies almost year-round, and each season gives you a completely different photograph.
January–March: dry terraces, mist, wild cherry and plum blossom. Low cloud means fewer flyable days.
April–May (water season): the flooded terraces mirror the sky. Clear air, steady wind. Well worth the trip.
June–July (green rice): the valley turns deep green. Afternoon showers are common; mornings fly well.
Late August–September (golden season): the whole valley turns gold under a high blue sky. The best of the year.
Early October: late-ripening rice, some fields already harvested. Still beautiful, and far less crowded than the National Day rush.
November–December: harvested terraces, early mist, seas of cloud. Cloud-chasing season, spectacular at dawn.
Local advice you will not find elsewhereDo not aim only for 2 September. It is the busiest window of the year — busy enough that waiting times stretch. For the same photographs without the crush, pick late August or the second week of September. The rice is still gold, the sky is still clear, and you fly almost as soon as you arrive.
The rice does not ripen all at once. Terraces at different altitudes ripen one to two weeks apart. Even when some fields are cut, from the air you still see an unbroken band of gold on the neighbouring slopes. That is the advantage of flying over shooting from the ground.
The hour matters as much as the day. The best light is 8:00–10:00 and 15:30–17:00. Midday sun flattens colour and the thermals are stronger.

If you want to fly with the atmosphere of a festival around you, this is the biggest occasion of the year.
The 2026 Flying Amid the Golden Season Paragliding Festival opens at 8:00 on 30 August 2026 at the Khau Pha landing field (Lim Mong field, Lim Thai hamlet, Tu Le commune), organised by Mebayluon Paragliding together with the Tu Le commune authorities.

If you come for the festival: this is the fastest-filling weekend of the year. Accommodation in Tu Le and Mu Cang Chai is usually gone two to three weeks ahead. Book your flight and your room as early as you can.

5. What actually happens during a flight at Khau Pha
Almost no other guide covers this, and it is the part that removes most of the worry. Here is the whole sequence, exactly as it runs.
Step 1 — Check in (5–10 minutes). We have offices at both ends: one at the launch on the summit and one at the landing field down in the valley. Which one you use depends on your direction of travel:
— Coming from Mu Cang Chai: go straight to the office at the launch site
— Coming from Tu Le: use the office at the landing field
There you check in, get a briefing, are weighed quickly so you can be matched to the right pilot and wing, receive your flight ticket and wait your turn.
Step 2 — Up to launch (10–15 minutes). The road from the landing field up to launch is fully paved — it is Highway 32 itself — and very easy. Motorbikes, cars, 16-seaters and even 45-seat coaches all make it. This is one of the few flying sites in the world where a full-size tour coach can park beside the launch.
Step 3 — Kit up and brief (5–10 minutes). Your pilot fits your harness and helmet and checks every buckle. You are taught exactly two things: when the pilot says run, walk forward steadily — do not jump, do not sit down; and when landing approaches, stretch your legs straight out in front. That is all.
Step 4 — Launch (10–20 seconds). You and the pilot take a few steps down the slope, the wing loads, and the ground simply leaves your feet. Most guests say this moment is far gentler than they expected — there is no free-fall sensation as in bungee jumping.
Step 5 — The flight (10–15 minutes). This is what you came for. Ten to fifteen minutes is the international standard for an experience flight: long enough to take in the whole Lim Mong valley and get all your footage, short enough that you do not get altitude-queasy or stiff. The pilot works the height, turns along the terraced slopes and films with the GoPro. If you want it calm, say so. If you want something more dynamic, say that too — your pilot follows your preference and never surprises you.
Step 6 — Landing (30 seconds). You touch down on the flat field at Lim Mong. Legs out, both feet down, the pilot brakes the wing. There is no impact.
Step 7 — Photos, video and certificate (10 minutes). You receive all your GoPro files and your certificate right there at the landing field, copied straight to your phone.
Total: 40–60 minutes. You can easily fly in the morning and still visit La Pan Tan the same afternoon.

6. Is paragliding in Mu Cang Chai safe?
This is the most searched question about the sport, and it deserves a real answer rather than a line saying it is perfectly safe, don't worry.
Tandem paragliding is safe because of four layers, not because of luckLayer 1 — Licensing and airspace. All flying at Khau Pha is authorised by Vietnam's Ministry of National Defence air operations authority. Flying outside that permission means flying without air traffic control — that is where the real risk sits, not in the sport itself.
Layer 2 — The pilot. A tandem pilot has thousands of hours and a passenger-carrying rating. These are not beginners. In the air you control nothing at all, which is a major difference from adventure sports where you must handle the situation yourself.
Layer 3 — Equipment. Tandem wings built to international standards, with a reserve parachute deployable at low altitude. Harnesses with back protection. Helmets are mandatory. Equipment is checked before every flight and retired on schedule.
Layer 4 — The decision to fly. This is the most important layer and the one guests find hardest to accept. We cancel when the weather is not right. Strong wind, wind from the wrong direction, low cloud over the landing field, rain — each is a reason to stop. No exception because a guest drove 300km. No exception because a guest pleads.
How weather actually affects your flight
Bad weather does not automatically mean cancellation. In practice there are three levels:
— Low cloud: no cancellation, but the flying pace slows and the queue lengthens.
— Rain: flying stops until it passes, then resumes.
— Strong or cross wind: a hold until the wind turns. If it does not, flying stops for the day.
And if you cannot fly?
You reschedule or cancel entirely free, deposit refunded. Even if you change your mind for personal reasons, giving us at least 2 hours notice costs nothing. That policy is fixed. An operator who pushes you into bad weather to protect its revenue is one you should walk away from.
Practical advice: if you are travelling far and have only one shot, give Tu Le two days rather than one. The odds of catching at least one flyable window across two days are far better than across one.

7. Who can fly and who should not: full requirements
Age
From 3 years old, with a parent or guardian present and consenting in writing. There is no upper age limit — we have flown guests over 70. The requirement is normal cardiovascular and joint health, and the ability to walk a few steps unaided.
Weight
Maximum 120kg. Under 30kg or over 90kg you can still fly, but tell us when booking so we can assign the right wing size and pilot. This is not a formality — incorrect wing loading changes how the glider behaves.
When you should not fly
Be honest with yourself here:
— Heart conditions, or uncontrolled high blood pressure
— Pregnancy
— Spinal injury, unhealed fractures, recent surgery
— Epilepsy, severe vestibular disorders
— Any alcohol before the flight
— Severe respiratory conditions
Can I fly if I am afraid of heights?
Yes — and this surprises people most. Fear of heights is mostly triggered by standing on a high surface and looking over an edge; your brain registers the risk of falling. Paragliding puts you seated in a harness, with no edge, no near reference point, and enough altitude that the ground below reads as a flat picture. Many guests with a fear of heights fly and are completely fine. What you should do: tell your pilot before launch. They will fly smoothly, avoid sharp turns and keep talking to you throughout.
Will I feel airsick?
Paragliding is far gentler than driving a mountain road — no bumps, no sudden braking. If you get carsick easily, the uncomfortable part of the day is the drive up the pass, not the flight. Avoid a heavy meal beforehand and ask your pilot to skip the spiral turns.

8. What to wear and bring
What to wear
— Trainers or trekking shoes with laces done up. This is a requirement, not a suggestion.
— Sportswear you can move in, with some stretch
— Bright colours: red, orange, white, vivid yellow. Against green or golden terraces these make you stand out. Brown, olive and black vanish completely.
— A light windbreaker (it is about 5–7°C colder up there)
— Wear glasses — sunglasses or ordinary ones, they keep wind and sun out of your eyes
— Hair tied back
What not to wear
— Skirts — you sit inside a harness, and a skirt simply does not work
— Flip-flops, sandals, heels
— Jewellery — rings, bracelets and necklaces snag and get lost in flight
— Bulky heavy coats
— Loose hair, which catches in the lines
To put it plainly: you go home with photos and video from this flight, so dress for them. Plenty of guests regret beautiful aerial footage in which they are a dark smudge against the terraces.

9. Getting to the Khau Pha flying site
Khau Pha Pass is about 270–300km from Hanoi, a drive of 6–7 hours.
The route: Hanoi → Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway → IC12 junction (Van Chan) → Highway 32 → Nghia Lo → Tu Le → Khau Pha Pass.
The most important point: getting up to launch is easy. The launch sits directly on Highway 32, at the summit of Khau Pha Pass. The road is fully paved end to end — no dirt track, no service road. Motorbikes, cars, 16-seaters, even 45-seat coaches drive right up. If your group travels by coach, there is nothing to worry about — an advantage very few paragliding sites in the world can offer.
Bus and limousine (recommended for first-time visitors). Several operators run Hanoi–Mu Cang Chai services through Tu Le, most departing overnight or early morning. You get off at Tu Le, a few kilometres from our landing-field office.
Motorbike. One of the finest rides in northern Vietnam. Khau Pha is a 30km pass with hairpins and frequent fog, so if you are not used to long mountain roads, avoid riding it at night or in thick mist. The stretch up to the launch itself is easy.
Private car. Good road, fine for families and groups. Drive straight up to launch, or park at the landing field and take our vehicle — your choice.
From Noi Bai Airport. Flying in from Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang, you can head straight from the airport without going into central Hanoi.
No vehicle? We collect you.
Many guests do not realise this and end up improvising. We run shuttles within Tu Le commune and pick guests up from Mu Cang Chai town and from Garrya Mu Cang Chai. If you arrive by bus with no transport of your own, call ahead and we will arrange a return transfer.

10. Where to stay
The rule: sleep as close to the launch as you can, because the best slot is 8:00 in the morning.
At the landing field itself (the best option). The Lim Mong landing field is not just a field — it sits in one of the most beautiful spots in the valley, and you can stay right there. You wake up to terraces and cloud, and the check-in office is a short walk away. Guests flying with us stay free at Mebayluon Clubhouse, excluding peak season and public holidays.
Tu Le — a few kilometres away. Good if you want the Tu Le hot springs after your flight.
Mu Cang Chai town — about 40km away. Good if you are combining the flight with a road trip to La Pan Tan and Mam Xoi hill.
Nghia Lo — about 50km away. More conventional hotels, but the furthest out.
In golden season and over public holidays, rooms around Tu Le are usually gone two to three weeks ahead. Book early.

12. Khau Pha compared with other flying sites in Vietnam
In short: Khau Pha outclasses every other flying site in Vietnam on scenery. That is not a ticket-seller's opinion — it comes down to the terrain itself.

Doi Bu (Chuong My, Hanoi) — close to Hanoi, flyable year-round, but at much lower altitude. Below you are lowland fields and low hills. A sensible first try when you do not want to travel far.
Nha Trang — coastal flying, attractive sea views, but without the depth of terrain that high mountains give.
Da Lat — pine hills and lakes, comfortable climate, but repetitive scenery and no strong seasonal change.
What actually separates Khau Pha is not the altitude — it is what lies beneath you. The Mu Cang Chai terraces were cut into the mountains by Hmong families over centuries, across thousands of hectares, changing colour with the season. Very few places on earth put a landscape like that directly under a proper flying site — which is why the footage you take home from Khau Pha looks like nowhere else.
If you only want to find out whether the sport suits you without travelling far, Doi Bu is a reasonable stepping stone. But if you are going for a flight you will remember, come straight to Khau Pha.

Why take a slot instead of buying at the gate?
This is the single most useful thing in this guide, and almost nobody tells you.
In golden season and over public holidays the site is busy. The flying rhythm also depends on the weather hour by hour: low cloud slows the pace, rain stops flying until it passes, strong or cross wind forces a hold. When the pace slows, the waiting list grows fast.
At that point the flying order follows the advance booking list. Walk-up guests always rank below those who booked. Booking early does not make you fly sooner on a clear day — but on a difficult day, it decides whether you fly at all.
What if your plans change? Cancellation and rescheduling are entirely free.
Just tell us at least 2 hours ahead — no fee, no deposit kept, no questions. And if you cannot fly because of weather or anything on our side, you also reschedule or cancel free. In other words: booking ahead carries no risk, so put it in the diary.

3. Do photos and video cost extra? Many operators quote low and then sell the images separately.

5. Am I booking with the site operator or through a reseller? Resellers usually cost more and are slower when the weather moves the schedule.

14. Powered paragliding at Khau Pha — chasing cloud and catching the sunset
A standard paraglider stays up on whatever lift the terrain gives it. That is beautiful and it is smooth, but it depends on two things nobody controls: the wind and the sun. Powered paragliding (paramotor, PPG) is different — the pilot climbs and descends at will, and that single difference opens up two experiences an unpowered wing cannot deliver.
Sunset flights — and the part nobody tells you
Plenty of guests come to Khau Pha hoping to fly exactly as the sun goes down. We understand why: it is the best frame of the day.
But plainly: if you wait for sunset on a standard wing, your odds are about 10%.
Three reasons:
— A clear sunset is rare to begin with. Not every evening opens up.
— Late afternoon brings cloud. It rolls in and covers the exact moment you were waiting for.
— An unpowered wing is limited in both range and altitude. Once the sun is low behind the ridge, there is almost no way to climb above the cloud layer, or high enough to catch it.
Which means you can drive 300km, stay a night, wait out a whole afternoon — and go home with nothing.
Powered paragliding solves exactly that problem. With an engine, the pilot climbs to thousands of metres, above the low cloud, and meets the sun from above. At that altitude, watching the sunset stops being luck and becomes a matter of technique.
Cloud chasing
For the same reason — control over altitude — powered paragliding is what we fly for cloud chasing. Your pilot threads through, banks around, then climbs out on top of the cloud sea, instead of waiting for the cloud to come down to the wing.
This is what our most demanding guests book, and it is the strongest experience we offer. Many people fly tandem once and come back only for the powered wing.

How much does paragliding in Mu Cang Chai cost?
The 2026 reference price is 2,190,000 VND per person for a standard tandem flight, including pilot, equipment, insurance, transport to launch, GoPro photos and video, and a certificate. Groups of 3 get 50,000 VND off per person, groups of 4 get 70,000 VND off.
Where exactly is the flying site?
The launch is on the summit of Khau Pha Pass, Tu Le commune, Yen Bai province, at 1,268m, directly on Highway 32. By familiar landmarks: about 23km from Garrya Mu Cang Chai, 20km from Mam Xoi hill and 40km from Mu Cang Chai town. Landing is at Lim Mong hamlet, Tu Le commune, about 5km from Tu Le centre.
How do I reach the site without my own vehicle?
Mebayluon runs shuttles within Tu Le commune and picks guests up from Mu Cang Chai town and Garrya Mu Cang Chai. Call +84 964 073 555 ahead and we will arrange a return transfer.
How many flying sites are there in Mu Cang Chai?
One. Khau Pha is the only site in the region — terrain and wind direction mean no other slope nearby can support a second one.
Do I need any flying experience?
No. These are tandem flights — a certified pilot flies the wing. You take a few steps at launch and stretch your legs out at landing.
How long is the flight?
10–15 minutes airborne, the international standard for an experience flight: enough to take in the whole valley and get your footage, not so long that you feel queasy. The full visit, including check-in, the drive up, the flight and collecting your files, takes 40–60 minutes.
Is it safe?
Yes, with a licensed operator. Flying at Khau Pha is authorised by the Ministry of National Defence, uses equipment built to international standards with a reserve parachute, is flown by rated tandem pilots, and is cancelled outright when conditions are not right.
Is the road to launch difficult? Can a coach get up?
It is easy. The road to launch is Highway 32, fully paved with no dirt sections. Motorbikes, cars, 16-seaters and 45-seat coaches all drive right up.
Can you see La Pan Tan and Mam Xoi hill from the air?
No. The Khau Pha flight path drops into the Lim Mong valley, while La Pan Tan lies beyond a mountain range and is not visible from the air. La Pan Tan and Mam Xoi hill are places you drive to for photographs, usually on the same trip.
When is the best month?
Late August to mid-October is the golden rice season and the best of the year. April–May brings the flooded terraces, June–July the green rice, November–December the cloud seas.
Is there a weight limit?
Maximum 120kg. Guests over 90kg or under 30kg can still fly but must tell us in advance so we can assign the right wing and pilot.
Can children fly?
Yes, from 3 years old, with a parent or guardian present and consenting.
Can I fly if I am afraid of heights?
Yes. Fear of heights is mostly triggered by looking down over an edge. In flight you are seated in a harness with no near reference point, and most guests with a fear of heights are completely fine. Tell your pilot so they fly smoothly.
What if it rains or the wind is strong?
Then you do not fly. The slot is postponed or cancelled, and you reschedule or get your deposit back free of charge. Allow two days in Tu Le to improve your chances.
Do photos and video cost extra?
No. All GoPro photos and video are handed over free and copied straight to your phone at the landing field. Drone and 360 camera filming are paid add-ons.

Yes. The Lim Mong landing field has accommodation in a beautiful setting, and guests flying with us stay free at Mebayluon Clubhouse, excluding peak season and public holidays.
How long does it take to learn to paraglide here?
The basic course Mebayluon runs at Khau Pha takes about 7 days with one-to-one instruction, and courses run continuously through the year.
Can pregnant women fly?
No. Pregnancy, heart conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure, spinal injury and epilepsy all rule out flying.
Can I still visit La Pan Tan after flying?
Yes. The whole experience takes only 40–60 minutes, so you can fly in the morning and drive to La Pan Tan and Mam Xoi hill in the afternoon.

Do advance bookings get priority over walk-ups?
Yes, and it matters. Flying order follows the advance booking list, so walk-up guests always rank lower. In golden season, or whenever weather slows the pace, this decides whether you fly that day.
Is there a fee to cancel or reschedule?
No. Both are entirely free with at least 2 hours notice. If weather prevents flying, rescheduling and cancellation are free as well.

Can I fly at sunset in Mu Cang Chai?
Yes, but book the powered wing. On a standard wing your odds of actually catching the sunset are about 10%: clear sunsets are rare, late afternoon brings cloud, and an unpowered wing is limited in both altitude and range, so climbing above the cloud to meet the sun is nearly impossible. Powered paragliding climbs to thousands of metres on demand, which turns the sunset from luck into technique.
Which wing do you use for cloud chasing at Khau Pha?
The powered wing. Because the pilot controls the climb and descent, they can thread through and then climb out on top of the cloud sea, rather than waiting for cloud to drop to the wing's height.
Is there anywhere else to paraglide in Mu Cang Chai besides Khau Pha?
No. Khau Pha is the only site in the region, and the only site in Vietnam offering all three disciplines: mountain launching, powered paragliding to thousands of metres, and intensive pilot training. That is also why it is ranked in the world's top ten flying sites.
What altitude do you fly at?
Launch is from 1,268m at the summit of Khau Pha Pass, with a flying band between 1,268m and 2,000m. On the powered wing the pilot can climb considerably higher.
