Everyone knows Mu Cang Chai in golden season. But seasoned travelers, photographers and pilots quietly favor another season — the green rice season. Right now, in late July, it is at its most beautiful. 🌾
After the water-pouring season of May–June, young rice has taken root and risen. More than 4,500 hectares of terraced fields across Mu Cang Chai now wear one seamless coat of green, climbing from the valley floor to the mountain tops.
The terraces are densest and most beautiful in the Lim Mong valley — which is exactly where the paragliding site sits. That is why flying at Khau Pha offers a view nothing else can match: beneath your wing lies the most concentrated stretch of terraced fields in the whole region, running from the foot of the pass out to the stream. Other famous areas such as La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh are scattered nearby.
Less flamboyant than golden season, the green season is softer and calmer — and from under a paraglider wing, many of our pilots say this is the most satisfying view of the year: an unbroken sea of green following every curve of the mountains, with no half-harvested patches breaking the picture.

🎨 The best color from above. From the ground, green season can look "not quite there yet". From a few hundred meters up, young rice covers 100% of the fields and the terrace lines stand out like the fingerprint of the mountains. Golden season is stunning, but rice never ripens evenly — fly during harvest week and you will see patches of gold and brown. Green season is perfectly uniform.
🌤️ Cool air, clear light. While Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City bake at 37–38°C, temperatures up here rarely pass 30°C, with crisp early mornings. The post-rain air is crystal clear — on good days, visibility from the glider stretches for dozens of kilometers across layered mountain ranges. Better still, after the short mountain showers you may catch a rainbow arcing across the valley. 🌈
🍃 Pleasantly empty. In golden season (September–October) Mu Cang Chai is packed: homestays sell out, the pass jams with motorbikes, viewpoints have queues. Green season is the opposite — you get Mam Xoi hill almost to yourself, flight slots without waiting, and room and service prices that stay stable.
If 2026 is the year you need a trip that truly resets you — no crowds, no queues, just wind, mountains and a healing shade of green — your window is now until mid-August. By late August the rice starts turning and the green slowly gives way to gold — which is exactly when the young-rice season begins.

🍚 Tu Le young rice festival — three days, August 21, 22, 23
Tu Le com — young green rice — is famous across northern Vietnam, since Tu Le is known for some of the country's best sticky rice. This year the com festival is being held for the second time. In late August the newly firm sticky rice is harvested and the whole valley celebrates: pestles pound com in every hamlet, the fresh green grains smell of rice milk, and Thai cultural events run for three days. Come at the right time and you can watch com being made and buy the freshest batch of the year.
🏃 Trail & Chill race — From 21-13 Aug
A trail race celebrating the terraced landscape. Runners gather on 21 August and race on 22 August over three distances — 10 km, 20 km and 30 km — on a course widely rated the most beautiful in the Northwest. More than 70% of the route runs through fields and forest, among terraces just turning from green to gold.
Beyond the running, the programme takes participants into Mong, Dao and Thai villages to taste local food, joins the Tu Le com festival, and closes with a gala night around a campfire with Mong khen music under the Khau Pha sky. The full package covers return transport, meals, homestay accommodation and the cultural activities.
Run in the morning, then fly in the afternoon and look back down on the course you just covered — a combination no other race in Vietnam offers.
🌾 Golden Season Paragliding Festival 2026 — opening 30 August
Right after the green season comes the golden one, and Khau Pha enters its biggest event of the year.
The 2026 Golden Season Paragliding Festival will open on the morning of 30 August 2026 at the Khau Pha landing field, starting with a flag-carrying flight to mark National Day on 2 September, followed by the accuracy landing competition. Flight operations for the golden season will run until the end of October — the full ripe-rice season.
If you are reading this during the green season, it is worth noting: same site, a few weeks apart, two completely different valleys.

🍚 Tu Le specialties: com, khau hang and Tu Le sticky rice
Tu Le is famous across the north for its rice. Sitting beneath three mountain ranges, the valley’s distinct climate and soil produce a sticky rice no other place can imitate:

Right at the paragliding area, you can visit It Thai village — a Black Thai community tourism village nestled beside a picturesque stream.
What makes It Thai worth the trip is how untouched it is: the landscape here has barely been altered by human hands, keeping the natural beauty of a highland Thai village — stilt houses, rice fields, clear water and an unhurried pace of life. No crowded shopfronts, no garish signage. This is a place to walk slowly, sit by the stream, and feel the northwest exactly as it is.

🚗 Getting there from Hanoi — just ~250km to the flying site
Many online guides still say Mu Cang Chai is 300km from Hanoi via the old Son Tay – Thanh Son road. In fact, from Hanoi to Khau Pha pass — where the paragliding takes place — it is only about 250km on the route we recommend:
🛣️ RECOMMENDED ROUTE
Hanoi → Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway → exit at IC14 (Mau A, ~km150) → Nghia Lo → Highway 32 → Tu Le → Khau Pha pass
We recommend the expressway + IC14 route for two reasons: it is safer (most of the distance is expressway, with far fewer mountain sections than the IC12/IC13 exits) and it is the biggest time-saver. Leave Hanoi at 6am and you will arrive in time for lunch with Tu Le sticky rice. ⚠️ Note that Khau Pha pass runs about 30km with tight switchbacks: check brakes and tires before the trip.
✈️ From Noi Bai airport: two daily buses run straight to Mu Cang Chai past the paragliding site — Thanh Anh in the morning and Mai Trang in the evening (8:00pm pickup). Very convenient for guests flying in from Ho Chi Minh City: land, board, done.
🌙 From Hanoi: buses depart across morning, afternoon, evening and late-night slots — the last around midnight from the My Dinh area. There are also countless shared-car and limousine-van options (1–2 early-morning departures daily). Tickets run about 250,000–350,000 VND one way, roughly 6–7 hours.
🛵 Motorbike rental on arrival: around 150,000–200,000 VND/day, or 100,000–120,000 VND for a half day — enough to get between villages and viewpoints.
The Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway to IC14 is the shortest and safest route to the flying site.
🍲 After your flight: where to eat nearby
The flying site sits in one of the densest food clusters in the northwest. Land your glider and you have a whole afternoon to spend:
🐟 Huy Thanh salmon and sturgeon right on Khau Pha pass. Huy Thanh restaurant doubles as the largest salmon and sturgeon farm in Lao Cai province, sitting on the pass midway between the paragliding takeoff and landing sites. Fish go from tank to table, firm and sweet. The classic pilot combo: glide over the valley in the morning, then a tangy salmon hotpot in the pass mist at lunch, with a plate of salmon salad and wild herbs on the side.

🍗 Local ethnic cuisine in Tu Le town. Pho Nui and Suoi Tien restaurants are two well-known spots for indigenous dishes: small stream fish fried crisp enough to eat bones and all, black H’Mong chicken grilled with mac khen pepper, village pork clamped in bamboo and grilled over coals, buffalo stir-fried with sour bamboo shoots, and Tu Le sticky rice. July–August is also peak season for sat bamboo shoots, roasted whole in their husks and dipped in cham cheo with doi seeds and mac khen — a dish nobody forgets.

📍 Where to play and check in during green season
🌊 Lim Mong valley – Lim Thai village (foot of Khau Pha pass) — the densest terraced fields in the region and the location of the flying site. Perfect for strolling, cycling over wooden bridges and wading in the cool Lim Thai stream.
⛰️ Mam Xoi hill (La Pan Tan) — the icon of Mu Cang Chai’s terraces; this season it looks from above like a giant jade tray. Empty in green season, so no queuing for photos.
🐴 Mong Ngua (Horseshoe) hill (Sang Nhu village) — soft horseshoe-shaped curves and the best sunset viewpoint in the region.
🧗 The Shoe Tip terraces of Che Cu Nha — much steeper terrain turns the green into sheer jade walls rising into the clouds.

⚠️ RAINY-SEASON NOTE FOR THE HILLS
The roads up Mam Xoi and Mong Ngua are steep clay tracks that get slippery after showers — scooters and self-driven cars cannot make it. Take a local H’Mong motorbike taxi (experienced riders, posted prices at the foot of the hill). Reference: 100,000–120,000 VND round trip for Mam Xoi, 150,000–200,000 VND for Mong Ngua.
