Water-Pouring Season in Mu Cang Chai: Paragliding Over Lim Mong

Every year from late May to the end of June, the Hmong farmers of Mu Cang Chai lead water from mountain streams onto the terraces to plant the new crop. For the first weeks the fields are mirrors for the sky; by late June the young rice has taken root and the Lim Mong valley below Khau Pha Pass slowly turns green.

Seeing the water-pouring season from the sky through a paragliding flight offers a completely different perspective—one that no hiking trail or viewpoint can provide. 👉 The water season is one of four. Compare the whole year in our guide to paragliding in Mu Cang Chai.

🌾 What is Mu Cang Chai's water-pouring season?

After the dry season, local farmers channel water from mountain streams into the terraced rice fields to prepare for the new rice crop. Thousands of rice terraces transform into giant mirrors reflecting the sky, clouds, and sunlight. It is one of the few times each year when the mountainsides appear covered with shimmering layers of water. From above, the flowing curves of the rice terraces create a spectacular natural masterpiece that changes color throughout the day.

🪂 Why fly during the water-pouring season?

Every season in Mu Cang Chai has its own charm. While the golden season is famous for its vibrant yellow rice fields, the water-pouring season offers extraordinary reflections and stunning light effects. During a Mu Cang Chai paragliding flight with Mebayluon Paragliding, visitors can admire the entire valley from hundreds of meters above the ground. Mong villages, winding mountain roads, and thousands of terraced rice fields come together to form a giant work of art beneath your feet.

📅 Best time to fly

The water-pouring season typically lasts from late May through June. This is when the rice terraces are freshly flooded, creating the most spectacular reflections of the year. For travelers who have already visited during the golden season, the water-pouring season offers an entirely new perspective of Mu Cang Chai.

🌾 Late June: young rice turns Lim Mong green

From above, Lim Mong Valley looks like a giant masterpiece. The terraced rice fields curve gracefully around the mountainsides, creating patterns that only nature could design. Every altitude reveals a different perspective. Tiny red dirt roads, Hmong houses nestled among green terraces, and winding streams cutting through the valley create a breathtaking panorama. This is why Lim Mong is widely considered one of the most spectacular paragliding sites in Vietnam.

✨ Moments that stay with you

There are moments when both pilot and passenger fall silent—not because of the height, but because the scenery is far more beautiful than any photo or video could ever capture. Every flight tells a different story. Some scream with excitement, some quietly admire the scenery, while others never stop taking photos.

🛬 Landing in Lim Mong village

After drifting through the sky, the wing slowly loses height. The green fields come closer and closer, and the voices and laughter of the villagers start to rise from the valley below. Nestled beneath the majestic Khau Pha Pass, Lim Mong Valley is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful valleys in Northwest Vietnam. Hidden among the mountains of Mu Cang Chai, Lim Mong Village remains remarkably untouched, where traditional Hmong houses are scattered among endless rice terraces and green mountainsides. What makes Lim Mong truly special is not only its rice terraces but also its vast bowl-shaped valley surrounded by towering mountains. From the summit of Khau Pha Pass, the valley unfolds like a giant masterpiece shaped by generations of Hmong farmers over hundreds of years. In June, shortly after the planting season, the entire valley transforms into a vibrant sea of green. Nature is at its freshest and most alive. Layer upon layer of rice terraces climb the mountainsides, creating countless shades of green that resemble a giant living carpet stretching across the landscape.
