The Khau Pha Pass paragliding site sits in Tu Le commune, Lao Cai province — right in the middle of the Nghia Lo to Mu Cang Chai road. Good news: if you are travelling from Hanoi up to Mu Cang Chai, Garrya or La Pan Tan, you will pass the flying site anyway, with no detour required. This guide covers how to reach it from the most common starting points in the region.
📍 Where is the site? Launch and landing zone are two different places
This is the first thing to get straight, as many visitors are surprised on arrival:
- The launch site is right at the top of Khau Pha Pass, beside National Road 32. You cannot miss it as you drive past
- The landing field is in the Lim Mong valley, about 1km in from the Ban Lim junction, with signposts. The access road is 7m of concrete, so even 40-seat coaches can turn around
Both are on National Road 32, so they are easy to find. When you book, you will be told which meeting point to go to depending on the time slot and wind conditions that day — always check with us rather than guessing, as it also depends on post-flight transport logistics and whether you are doing regular paragliding or paramotoring (Paramotors will take off directly from the landing zone).
What is at the Khau Pha launch and landing sites?
🗺️ Distances from common starting points
All routes follow National Road 32 — paved, suitable for both cars and motorbikes:
- Nghia Lo town — about 50km, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes
- Mu Cang Chai town — about 40km, roughly 1 hour
- Horseshoe Bend — about 33km, roughly 40 minutes
- Garrya Mu Cang Chai — about 23km, roughly 30 minutes
- Mam Xoi Hill (La Pan Tan) — about 22km, roughly 30 minutes
- Nga Ba Kim junction — about 15km, roughly 20 minutes
Note: this is mountain road with many hairpin bends, so average speeds are lower than on flat roads. Add 15–20 minutes of buffer, especially in fog or during the rainy season.
🚌 Option 1: Take a coach along National Road 32
Plenty of buses run this exact route every day, since National Road 32 is the main artery linking Hanoi, Nghia Lo, Tu Le, Mu Cang Chai, Than Uyen and Lai Chau.
- Long-distance sleeper buses: Mai Trang, Ha Trang, Ket Doan, Thanh Anh, Thao Nguyen, Viet Phuong, Cuong Lan and Gia Khanh. Gia Khanh usually leaves Mu Cang Chai town around 1–2pm, which works well for an afternoon flight on the way back
- Local route buses on the shorter Nghia Lo and Yen Bai legs, departing at fixed times: Cuong Lan (based in Tu Le), Son Phuong, Tuan Hue, Chien Thanh, Duc Huong and Quan Van
- Services from other provinces: direct buses from Thai Binh (Duc Chung, Ngan Ha) and Thai Nguyen (Son Phuong), all passing over Khau Pha Pass
All of these drop passengers along the way, so simply ask the driver to stop at the top of Khau Pha Pass or at the Ban Lim junction (landing zone). Schedules vary by season and operator, so call to confirm before your travel date.
🏡 Staying nearby? You are closer than you think
Many guests do not realise their accommodation is only minutes from the flying site:
- Tu Le commune (Tu Le town centre, Le Champ Tu Le Resort Hot Spring & Spa): just 3–5km, under 10 minutes by car
- It Thai village and the homestays around the landing field — KPF Khau Pha, Blue Home Khau Pha, Little House in Khau Pha: a few hundred metres on foot
If you are in the second group you are essentially staying inside the flying site: open your door in the morning and you will see gliders launching overhead, with no transport to arrange at all.
🚗 Option 2: Drive yourself
The simplest option of all: just follow National Road 32. The launch site is on the roadside at the top of the pass. For the landing field, turn at the Ban Lim junction and follow the signs for 1km.
- Khau Pha is one of the four great passes of Northwest Vietnam, with tight bends and steep gradients — drive slowly, take corners wide and sound your horn before blind curves
- Avoid driving at night or in thick fog, when visibility can drop to a few metres
- The landing field has parking for around 40 cars, including full-size coaches
🛵 Option 3: Motorbike taxi or car taxi
The most flexible option if you are not driving and do not want to depend on bus timetables:
- Motorbike taxi: around 10,000 VND/km — best if travelling alone
- Taxi: around 15,000 VND/km — with a group of 3–4 this works out cheaper per head
As an example, from Garrya down to the flying site (about 23km) a taxi costs roughly 350,000 VND for the whole car. You can negotiate for the driver to wait and take you back, which is cheaper than two separate trips.
🚐 Option 4: The Mebayluon shuttle
If you book early, Mebayluon runs a door-to-door shuttle from the Garrya area and Mu Cang Chai town, with a surcharge of 150,000 – 300,000 VND per person depending on the pickup point. It is the cheapest and most convenient option, with one condition: you need to fit our vehicle schedule. Book as early as you can so we can slot you into a suitable departure.
🕐 Just 45 minutes — easy to slot into any itinerary
Many visitors worry that paragliding will eat up half a day. In practice the whole experience takes about 45 minutes, from arrival to touchdown. If you are staying near Mam Xoi, Garrya or in Mu Cang Chai town, you have two choices:
- Fly on day one as you drive past the pass: stop, fly, then carry on to your accommodation. This is what we recommend
- Fly on your way back to Hanoi. Also convenient, but you must book ahead: the service fills up in peak season and the weather can turn overnight
When you book, our team will advise which option suits the forecast. The general rule: fly early if conditions allow. Once it is done you can enjoy the rest of your trip without watching the sky anxiously.

- Motorbike rental (150,000 – 200,000 VND per day, 100,000 – 120,000 for half a day) to explore nearby spots
- A soak in the natural Tu Le hot springs, 5km from the landing field
- Sturgeon and salmon at Huy Thanh restaurant on the pass
- Visit It Thai village for green rice pounding and Black Thai indigo dyeing
- A break at Mebayluon Clubhouse — a stilt house at the landing field with a restaurant, cafe and rooms
