How to Get to Mu Cang Chai and Khau Pha: Buses, Taxis and Routes

Tu Le, Mu Cang Chai and Khau Pha Pass lie on National Highway 32 (QL32), 250–300 km from Hanoi. There are two ways up — straight along QL32, or along the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway and off at the IC14 junction — and the two meet in Nghia Lo. The final stretch is a mountain pass road with many bends and long climbs. Expect about 4 hours by private car and 5–7 hours by bus. This article gathers every bus company currently running to Mu Cang Chai, sorted by where you're starting from, so you can find your own trip without reading everything. 👉 Once you've picked your bus, the next step is booking your flight. Prices, the best season and how to get a queue number are all in our guide to paragliding in Mu Cang Chai.

⚡ Choose in 30 seconds

You're in Hanoi and want to travel by day? → Limousine van at 5:00 or 5:30 in the morning, arriving in time for lunch. See section 1. You'd rather sleep and wake up there? → Overnight sleeper bus, boarding 18:30–00:00. See section 2. You've just landed at Noi Bai? → Some buses pick up right at the airport — no need to go into the city. See section 3. Driving yourself? → Exit at the IC14 junction, not IC15. See section 4. Starting from somewhere else? → Yen Bai · Nghia Lo · Sa Pa and Lao Cai · other provinces. Coming to paraglide? → Don't ride all the way to Mu Cang Chai. Get off earlier, at the Ban Lim junction. See the box just below.

🪂 Important: the paragliding site is BEFORE Mu Cang Chai

The Khau Pha Pass paragliding site — the only paragliding site in the whole Mu Cang Chai and Tu Le area — is not in Mu Cang Chai town but on Khau Pha Pass, and has two points: 📍 Landing field — near the Ban Lim junction, 5 km from Tu Le. This is where buses drop passengers off. 📍 Launch — at the top of Khau Pha Pass, 40 km from Mu Cang Chai town. If you're coming to fly, get off at the Ban Lim junction — don't stay on until Mu Cang Chai. Overshooting and coming back costs you nearly 3 extra hours there and back.

🔎 Can't find “Ngã ba Bản Lìm” (Ban Lim junction) on Google Maps? You're not alone — the spot has no named pin on the map, so many travellers search for it in vain. Tap the button below to open the exact coordinates, save them (⭐ Save) before you set off, and show them to the driver if needed.

How to work out when your bus reaches the paragliding site 📐 5 km ≈ 10 minutes from Tu Le — once you pass Tu Le, you're almost there. 📐 From the Ban Lim junction to Mu Cang Chai town is 50 km — about 60 minutes by private vehicle, about 1 hour 30 by bus, since it picks up and drops off passengers along the way. As most times in this article are bus times, use the 1 hour 30 rule: 🔻 Heading up (Hanoi → Mu Cang Chai): take the bus's arrival time in Mu Cang Chai and subtract 1 hour 30. Example: bus arrives in Mu Cang Chai at 18:00 → passes the paragliding site around 16:30. 🔺 Heading down (Mu Cang Chai → Hanoi): take the bus's departure time from Mu Cang Chai and add 1 hour 30. Example: bus leaves Mu Cang Chai at 13:00 → passes the paragliding site around 14:30. 🚗 If you're driving, cut that to about 60 minutes for the same distance. In the sections below, the time the bus passes the paragliding site is marked with 🪂. When you book, tell the bus company you're getting off at the Ban Lim junction so the driver stops in the right place.

The two routes to Mu Cang Chai — National Highway 32 and the expressway via the IC14 junction — meet in Nghia Lo. The paragliding site is at the Ban Lim junction, before Mu Cang Chai town.

The fares below are for reference and change with the season. During the golden rice season (September–October) buses sell out easily — book ahead by phone and reconfirm the departure time before your travel day.

🚐 1. From Hanoi — travelling by day

This option suits people who get carsick on night buses, families with young children, or anyone who wants to enjoy the scenery on the way. Leave early and you'll reach Mu Cang Chai just in time for lunch. ⏱️ The time in brackets on the route line is the estimated time the vehicle passes the paragliding site (Ban Lim junction): the departure time plus about 4 hours. It's a rough guide — still check with the bus company when you book.

✈️ Detailed guide: From Noi Bai Airport to Mu Cang Chai

🚗 4. Driving yourself — pick the right junction

There are two routes to Mu Cang Chai; they meet in Nghia Lo and share the final stretch: 🛣️ National Highway 32 — the traditional route Hanoi → Son Tay → Thanh Son / Thanh Thuy → Thu Cuc → Van Chan → Nghia Lo → Tu Le → Paragliding site → Mu Cang Chai. One continuous road with no expressway, but it's narrow and passes through many towns. 🛣️ Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway — the route most people take Hanoi → Noi Bai Airport → expressway → exit at the IC14 junction → Mo Vang → Lien Son (Nghia Lo) → Tu Le → Paragliding site → Mu Cang Chai. Faster, because you can drive at high speed for most of the first leg. From Nghia Lo onwards the two routes are one, and the final destination is Mu Cang Chai: 📍 Nghia Lo → Tu Le → Paragliding site (Ban Lim junction) → Mu Cang Chai Nghia Lo → Tu Le is about 45 km. Tu Le → paragliding site is another 5 km. From the paragliding site down to Mu Cang Chai town is 50 km more, about 60 minutes by private vehicle.

If you take the expressway, exiting at the right junction matters most.

✅ IC14 JUNCTION (Mau A) — this is the exit to take The IC14 – Mo Vang – Lien Son link road is about 98% asphalted, two lanes. A few short sections are still under construction, but they've been laid with base stone and rolled flat — low-clearance cars can manage fine, just slow down. 📏 From IC14 via Mo Vang to Lien Son: 56 km, about 70 minutes. 📏 If you exit at IC12 or IC13, it's 85 km to Lien Son — almost 30 km further. ❌ IC15 JUNCTION (Dong Cuong) — not usable yet The road linking IC15 with National Highway 32 at Gia Hoi is about 50 km long and expected to open in September. Once finished, the distance from the expressway to Tu Le will drop to about 80 km instead of today's 120 km. But the IC15 junction itself on the expressway isn't finished yet — it's part of the expressway widening project, so for now you still have to exit at IC14 and loop up. 🚧 The Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway is being widened The section from IC13 (Km123+080, Yen Bai) to IC18 (Km244+155, Lao Cai), over 120 km long, is being widened from 2 to 4 lanes, with completion expected at the end of 2026. Traffic to Mu Cang Chai uses this section before exiting at IC14 — so allow extra time, especially at weekends.

📅 Golden season events 2026 — book early

These are the busiest days of the year in Mu Cang Chai. Buses and homestays can sell out a week ahead, so if your trip falls on these dates, book as early as possible:

  • Tu Le Green Rice (Com) Festival — opens 22 August 2026, in Tu Le commune
  • Trail & Chill Golden Season — 22–23 August 2026
  • Paragliding festival “Flying Amid the Golden Season” — opens 30 August 2026, at the Khau Pha landing field
  • Mu Cang Chai Ultra Trail — expected 1–3 October 2026, through La Pan Tan and Che Cu Nha
  • To Day (wild Himalayan cherry) Blossom Festival — December to January of the following year

The rice starts ripening in mid-August and is at its most beautiful from around September to early October.

🪂 Stop at the Khau Pha paragliding site

Good news: every bus to Mu Cang Chai passes the landing field (Lim Mong valley) and launch at the top of the pass. You don't need to hire a private car to get here — just pick the right trip and get off at the right place. 🚌 By bus: ask the company to drop you at the Ban Lim junction, 5 km from Tu Le. 🚗 Driving yourself: turn at the Ban Lim junction; signs point the way to the landing field. 🕐 Timing: see the “Important” box at the top of the article — by bus, the time you pass the paragliding site is the arrival time in Mu Cang Chai minus 1 hour 30, or the departure time from Mu Cang Chai plus 1 hour 30. If you're driving, allow about 60 minutes. Launch is at the top of Khau Pha Pass, at 1,268 m, with flights between 1,268 m and 2,000 m. The landing field is near the Ban Lim junction, 5 km from Tu Le. This is also where the paragliding festival “Flying Amid the Golden Season” takes place every year.

⚠️ Good to know before you go

  • Fares in this article are for reference and change with the season — they usually rise in the September–October peak.
  • Always book by phone and reconfirm the departure time before your travel day. Bus companies change their schedules by season quite often.
  • Night buses usually reach Mu Cang Chai at 4:00–5:00 in the morning, earlier than homestay check-in. Ask in advance whether the bus company or your homestay has somewhere you can rest.
  • The road is a long mountain pass with steep climbs and many bends. If you're prone to motion sickness, choose a daytime trip and sit near the front.
  • In the rainy season (June–August) there are occasional local landslides on National Highway 32 — ask the bus company about road conditions before setting off.
