Doi Bu Paragliding Site: Getting There, Altitude and Best Season

Doi Bu — known to many pilots as Hill 833 — is the oldest flying site in northern Vietnam, in operation for around fifteen years, and one of the two closest sites to Hanoi that Mebayluon runs. This page is about Doi Bu itself: location, altitude, terrain, the best season, getting there and what the hill is like. Full ticket prices, pickups and a comparison of the two sites near the capital are on our Hanoi paragliding page.

📍 Where is Doi Bu?

Doi Bu lies in Nui Be hamlet, Xuan Mai commune, Hanoi. Following the recent administrative reorganisation, this address replaces the older Nam Phuong Tien commune, Chuong My district. It is about 45 km from central Hanoi, roughly an hour by car — the closest of all the sites Mebayluon operates, and easily done as a day trip.

📏 Altitude and terrain

The mountain rises 833 m above sea level, which is why pilots know it as "Hill 833". The launch sits at 650 m, above a slope running about 1.5 km.

The open terrain and steady wind are why Doi Bu is used as a training site by paragliding clubs across northern Vietnam, not just for tandem guests. In good wind seasons, pilots here have reached altitudes above 1,500 m.

🌄 Flight experience – More than just an adrenaline rush

Paragliding at Doi Bu is not just an adventurous activity but also a unique way to experience nature. You will fly in tandem with a professional pilot and receive full instructions before takeoff, making it completely suitable even for first-time participants. Thanks to its bowl-shaped valley terrain, the wind conditions here are relatively stable, allowing the paraglider to glide more smoothly and stay airborne longer. As a result, flight time usually lasts around 15–20 minutes, and can even be longer when weather conditions are ideal—longer than many other paragliding sites. Taking off from the mountain peak and landing right at the base, the entire journey is smooth and seamless, offering a perfect blend of excitement and relaxation.

Doi Bu is located in Chuong My District, about 40–50 km southwest of central Hanoi. You can easily find the location on Google Maps by searching for “Đồi Bù Chương Mỹ” or “Đồi Bù paragliding.”

🍂 When is the best season?

Doi Bu is at its best — and safest — during the northeast wind season, from late autumn into early winter, usually October to December. When the monsoon arrives the air turns cool, dry and clear, and the wind blows steadily and evenly. These are ideal flying conditions: flights lasting tens of minutes are routine. In this wind, Doi Bu is considered one of the safest flying sites in northern Vietnam, because the airflow stays steady rather than shifting unpredictably. From late October the white reed season begins — the image most associated with Doi Bu. The slopes turn white and the scenery becomes genuinely photogenic. Many groups climb to the summit just for photos among the reeds, to camp and barbecue, or to bring the whole family out for a day outdoors.

From January to August the southerly wind dominates, so Mebayluon's main site moves to Vien Nam Peak, a hill facing the opposite way. You don't need to choose in advance: the evening before your flight we tell you which site the wind favours. In winter Doi Bu is often misty and some days are not flyable, but it is also the time to chase a sea of clouds.

🚗 Getting there from Hanoi

There are two routes from Hanoi to Doi Bu, and both meet at the Xuan Mai crossroads. Route 1 – via Ha Dong: follow Highway 6 to the Xuan Mai crossroads. Route 2 – via Thang Long Boulevard: turn off into Quoc Oai, then take provincial road 421B straight to the Xuan Mai crossroads. From Xuan Mai, turn left onto the Ho Chi Minh road for about 5 km to the Cho Ca crossroads. Turn right there and continue 2 km to the foot of Doi Bu. The final climb to the summit is a dirt track. Do not attempt to drive yourself to the top. The gradient is severe, and plenty of vehicles have had to call for recovery partway up. Only high-clearance 4x4s on off-road tyres can make it. Mebayluon runs a round-trip shuttle from Hanoi and a dedicated off-road transfer from the base of the hill to launch, so you don't need your own vehicle.

🚐 Shuttle service from Hanoi to Doi Bu

When using the shuttle service of the paragliding operator at Doi Bu, visitors will be picked up at GO! Thang Long (222 Tran Duy Hung Street, Hanoi) and travel along a convenient route: 👉 Route: Big C Thang Long → Thang Long Boulevard → Quoc Oai junction → Xuan Mai intersection → Ho Chi Minh Trail → Cho Ca intersection → Doi Bu base (waiting area) 🛣️ Travel experience 🔻 🔻 The entire journey takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic conditions. 🔻 The first section is smooth and easy along Thang Long Boulevard 🔻 As you get closer, the route transitions into hilly terrain with fresher air and more scenic natural landscapes 🔻 Visitors are taken directly to the base waiting area, where preparations are made before heading up to launch. ⭐ Advantages of using Mebayluon Paragliding shuttle 🔻 No need to navigate on your own, avoiding wrong turns or getting lost. 🔻 Fixed schedule and route, helping optimize travel time. 🔻 Comfortable ride, allowing you to relax before the flight. 👉 This is the most convenient option, especially for visitors unfamiliar with the area. Visitors can also drive a car or ride a motorbike along the same route to reach the waiting area directly. Upon arrival, you will meet the pilot for a brief introduction and safety instructions before being transported up the mountain to begin your paragliding experience. ⭐ Disadvantages: 👉 There is currently no public bus route passing through Doi Bu, so transportation options are limited.

Off-road by a specialized vehicle

🚙 The off-road climb to the launch point

To reach the launch at Doi Bu, you will travel for about 20 minutes by a specialized vehicle. This is an exciting part of the experience, as you get to enjoy an off-road journey along rugged, untouched dirt paths, winding through steep and curving mountain slopes. However, you can feel completely at ease because: 🔷 The vehicles are designed specifically for mountainous terrain 🔷 Drivers are experienced and familiar with the route 🔷 The cars are well-ventilated (often with open windows), helping reduce motion sickness It is also important to note that the road to the top includes steep inclines and sharp turns. If you choose to drive a motorbike or car yourself without sufficient experience or without a suitable vehicle, it can be difficult to control and less safe compared to using the operator’s transport service.

🎒 Who can fly and what to bring

Guests fly tandem with a pilot, so no experience is needed. You should not fly, however, if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or a clinical fear of heights. Wear long trousers and trainers or ankle boots, and bring a light jacket — it is noticeably colder at launch than at the foot of the hill. If you get motion sick easily, take something for it before the flight.

💰 How much does it cost?

Paragliding at Doi Bu starts from 1,790,000 VND per flight, varying with the add-ons you choose. Optional extras include: - Shuttle transfer from central Hanoi - Hotel pickup and drop-off - 360-degree video - Drone footage The base package covers the tandem flight with a professional pilot. If you want a full set of photos and video from the flight, add the 360 and drone filming when you book.

🎥 Capturing the moment from the air

To keep the flight, you can add: 👉 GoPro: already included in the flight package, recording the flight from your point of view. 👉 Drone (400,000 VND): films the whole flight from above, with your wing among the hills. 👉 360° camera (400,000 VND): records everything around you at once — you, the pilot, the wing and the mountains on every side. Both drone and 360° camera together: 700,000 VND.

🌅 Sunset flights at Doi Bu

One of the most special experiences at Doi Bu is flying at sunset. At this time, the sky gradually turns into a vibrant orange hue, and the sunlight bathes the entire landscape in a warm golden glow, creating a truly stunning and romantic scene. A sunset flight costs an extra 700,000 VND per person, in the 16:30–17:30 slot; if the sunset doesn't show up as forecast, that part is refunded. ⚠️ However: This experience depends on weather conditions and the season, so sunset flights are not available every day. The lower light levels may make photos slightly darker, but in return, the sky and scenery become extremely “photogenic,” offering a beautiful, artistic atmosphere.

⏱️ How long does the trip take?

A paragliding trip from Hanoi to Doi Bu, including the flight and the drive back, usually takes about three and a half hours. That is why many guests fit Doi Bu into a free morning or afternoon rather than taking a whole day off. Add other activities — trekking to the summit, camping, or a meal at the base — and the trip stretches to five or six hours, or a full day depending on what you plan.

⚠️ Important notes

The Doi Bu area is a mountainous region located quite far from the city center and is not yet a fully developed tourist destination, so food and beverage services are limited. 👉 Therefore, you should bring your own food and drinks to avoid getting hungry during the trip, as the total duration (travel, flying, and return) usually takes around 4–5 hours. Weather also directly affects paragliding activities, so you may sometimes need to wait longer than expected to ensure safe flying conditions. 👉 Before going, it is recommended to carefully check the weather forecast and prepare accordingly, such as bringing a jacket, sunscreen, or an umbrella depending on the actual conditions.

🥾 Trekking to the summit

The dirt track up Doi Bu — steep, passable only by high-clearance 4x4 vehicles.

If you would rather not take a vehicle, you can trek from the base to the summit. The trail starts at the paragliding landing field — a wild dirt path, about two hours on foot to the top. Bring water and snacks: there are no services at all up there, just open country and the view. One detail worth knowing: on clear days you can pick out the Keangnam tower in My Dinh, Hanoi, from the summit of Doi Bu.

Trekking up Doi Bu is a favourite activity too

☕ Services and the paragliding cafe at the base

At the landing field below the hill there is a paragliding service area with the Doi Bu cafe, open all year round. It offers food and coffee, camping tents for hire, and the off-road transfer up and down the mountain for anyone who would rather not walk. It is also where guests gather before flights and wait for the shuttle.

🏕️ Camping on Doi Bu mountain

In addition, you can also choose to go camping for a day or stay overnight at the top of Doi Bu to fully enjoy the natural surroundings. At the base of the mountain, there are available services for tent rental, camping setup support, and BBQ organization. Visitors can either use these services or bring their own food and drinks to suit their personal preferences. 👉 This is a highly popular experience, especially in the late afternoon when you can watch the sunset from the mountaintop, and early in the morning when you can hunt for clouds in a peaceful and open mountain setting.

Tram Mountain

Tram Pagoda is a historic and sacred pagoda with a peaceful atmosphere. 🔻 Tram Gian Pagoda (Tien Phuong): a historic and elegant ancient pagoda known for its unique traditional Vietnamese architecture and popular as a pilgrimage site. 🔻 Phu Vinh bamboo & rattan village: a traditional craft village where you can watch artisans at work and purchase finely handcrafted bamboo and rattan products. 🔻 Chuong village conical hat village: a traditional craft village famous for producing iconic Vietnamese conical hats (nón lá). 🔻 Van Minh Resort: a resort offering relaxation, dining, and local cuisine, ideal for unwinding after your paragliding experience. 👉 These attractions are all located near Doi Bu and are easy to reach, making it perfect to combine paragliding, cultural exploration, and relaxation in a single trip.

⚠️ Fly with a reputable operator

Paragliding demands real expertise and strict safety procedures. A number of freelance independent pilots operate at Doi Bu whose safety standards cannot be verified. Before booking, check the operator: what certification and flight hours the pilots hold, how the equipment is inspected, and whether insurance is included. This is not the place to economise.

🔄 What if you book and the weather turns?

Doi Bu depends heavily on the wind, so some days are perfect and others have to be postponed. That's why Mebayluon offers free refunds, cancellations and rescheduling — book ahead without risking your money if the weather doesn't cooperate.
